Abstract

NOOTROPIC ACTIVITY OF CELASTRUS PANICULATUS SEED OIL AGAINST COLCHICINE INDUCED COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN RATS

ABSTRACT

Celastrus paniculatus seed oil is an essential oil of Celastrus paniculatus seeds by hydrodistillation. It contains high amount (55%) were phytosterols, fatty acids and phenolic contents. It has been reported that, Celastrus paniculatus seed oil is having a protective role in oxidation and beneficial in Sporadic dementia of Alzheimer’s type (SDAT). But there is no clear scientific work is available regarding the use of the Celastrus paniculatus seed oil in the spatial working memory and learning memory using Colchicine induced neurotoxicity as an animal model. so the present study evaluate the nootropic potential of Celastrus paniculatus seed oil against Colchicine induced cognitive impairment in rats using in vivo and ex vivo models. The Intracerebroventricular(ICV) injection was performed to administer Colchicine to both the laterals ventricle of the Wistar albino rats cause cognitive dysfunction as evidenced by poor retention of memory in both Radial arm maze and Morris water maze task paradigms that is associated with excessive free radical generation. Biochemical analysis revealed that ICV colchicine injection significantly induced lipid peroxidation, increased nitrite and decline in the actylcholinesterase levels. Thre was a significant memory improvement in rat received Celastrus paniculatus seed oil treatment and also decreased actylcholinesterase enzyme level, conforming its nootrpic activity. These results indicate that Celastrus paniculatus seed oil provide a significant protection against spatial working and learning memory impairment.
