Taher Patel*, N. Siva Subramanian, Mahveen Anjum and Challa Priyanka

ABSTRACT

1,3,4-Oxadiazole are the important pharmacophore and privileged substructures in medicinal chemistry owing to their involvement as a key component for various biological activities. The high profile of biological applications displayed by compounds associated with these nuclei have prompted wide studies for their synthesis a large number of efforts were madeto synthesize different heterocyclic compounds and their derivatives in the past decade and were found to posses promising antimicrobial activity. The oxadiazole nucleus with N=C-O linkage exhibits a large number of pharmacological activities. Oxazole derivatives containing heterocyclic moiety are known for their interesting antifungal bioactivities and have attracted considerable attention in pesticide and medicinal formulation. A large number of report on their synthesis and biological activities have appeared during the last three years. Extensive biochemical and pharmacological studies have confirmed that 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives are effective against various strains of microorganisms. This review is mainly an attempt to present the research work reported in the recent scientific literature on antimicrobial activitity of 1,3,4-oxadiazole compounds.

Keywords: 1,3,4-Oxadiazole, Antibacterial activity, Antifungal activity.
