ABSTRACT

In the traditional systems of medicine, many medicinal plants are being prescribed for inflammatory condition. The present study was aimed at investigating the ameliorative effect of Adenanthera Pavonina (AP) in sciatic nerve transection (axotomy)-induced peripheral neuropathy in rats. The behavioral parameters were evaluated by using the seeds of a medicinal plant AP in rat axotomy induced model. Male albino rats divided into 5 groups of 5 animals each were used and were treated orally with vehicle (control group), Diclofenac (standard group, and was given at 10mg/kg) and 50, 100 & 200mg/kg of AP seed extract daily for 15 days. Administration of alcoholic seed extract of AP attenuated sciatic nerve transection i.e., axotomy- induced increased foot deformation, cold-hyperalgesia, motor in-coordination and inflammation. Phytochemical screening were also performed for seed and showed that the alcoholic extract contained cardiac glycosides, phlobatannins, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids. Cyanogenetic glycosides and anthraquinones were absent. The significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity showed by alcoholic extracts may be due to the presence of flavonoids and tannins and their influence on the prostaglandin pathway. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory attenuating actions may be responsible for observed ameliorative effects of AP in axotomy-induced neuropathy.

Keywords: Sciatic Nerve Transection, Neuropathy and AP.
