ABSTRACT

In the current scenario of ageing population, changed lifestyle and environmental factors, a very prevalent eye disease is ‘Dry Eye Syndrome’. It is characterized by Burning Sensation in the eyes, dryness, foreign body sensation and other ocular discomforts which interfere with normal routine functioning. The available modern treatment for dry eye requires frequent instillation and may lead to non-compliance and costly regime. To overcome these lacunas, it is necessary to look for alternative therapy. According to Ayurveda, the symptoms of dry eye can be co-related with Shushkakshipaka, and at the same time various treatment modalities are described like Tarpan as line of treatment. In the study design group A is treated with Jivanti ghrita tarpan and group B is treated with Carboxy methyl cellulose 0.5% eye drop. After this comparative clinical study it can be concluded that the patients of Dry eye syndrome who were treated with Netra–tarpan with Jivanti ghrita in Group A were better treated than in Group B.

Keywords: Shushkakshipaka, Dry eye syndrome, Netra tarpan, Jivanti ghrita, Carboxy methyl cellulose.
