Abstract

SCREENING OF ANTI-MICROBIAL PROFILING OF SIDDHA FORMULATION – CHITRAMUTTI NEI USING AGAR WELL DIFFUSION METHOD

ABSTRACT

Siddha system of medicine holds greater importance in the southern region of India for several centuries. As per the literature, it was quite evident that the treatment methodology practiced in the Siddha system has been adopted from the documentary repository of Siddhars (ancient vedic physician) who systematically standardized the protocols on formulations and also standardized all the individual components of the formulation. It was believed for several years that the most of the polyherbal Siddha formulations seems to have significant anti-microbial properties, but in the real scenario this belief has failed in several attempts. The main objective of the present study is to screen the antimicrobial property of the Siddha formulation Chitramutti Nei (CN) a well-known classical drug selected from the Siddha classical literature. The antimicrobial property of CN was studied against Gram-negative and Gram-positive microorganisms using agar well diffusion method. The result of antimicrobial screening study clearly proofs that the drug CN did not show anti-microbial activity at the concentrations of 100 to 300 μg against any of the tested organisms such as Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. From the study it was concluded that the drug CN has no anti-microbial property against the selective organisms as mentioned above and hence further study has to be carried out in higher concentration and also against other gram negative and gram positive organisms.
