ABSTRACT
Modern science has made much progress in discovering the benefits
of specific compounds found in fruits and vegetables. Nutrient-dense
“superplants” go a step further and are packed with complex blends of
phytonutrients that work together to promote optimal health. One such
“superfruit” is the blueberry, which contains a powerhouse of
nutrients that may defend the body against the ravages of aging and
disease. Blueberries are a nutrient rich fruit containing antioxidants
and anti-inflammatory compounds particularly Anthocyanins,
Proanthocyanins, Flavanols and Tannins that are reported to be
effective in reducing cholesterol thereby reducing the risks of
cardiovascular diseases. Anthocyanins and Ellagic acid are
particularly responsible for fighting against cancer. Blueberry
consumption is also associated with alleviating the cognitive decline
seen in Alzheimer’s patients, lowering the severity of stroke damage exhibiting immense
potential as a brain superfood. Moreover, blueberries contain compounds that prevent the
adhesion of bacteria responsible for urinary tract infections and eye infections, act as
antidiabetic, antiallergic, antimicrobial and antiproliferative. This tiny superfruit boosts up
immunity helps in several other infections too. Unlocking the mystery of how such a
diminutive fruit is capable of working so many miracles has spawned a frenzy of scientific
investigation.
