Abstract

A STUDY ON PREVALENCE OF DIABETIC FOOT ULCER AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN A MULTI SPECIALITY HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Aim/Objective: To assess the prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer and to determine the quality of life among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in a multispeciality hospital. Methodology: A prospective observational study was carried out for the period of 1 year in the department of general medicine among 146 Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. Demographics and disease details was collected using data entry form and quality of life was measured before and after patient counseling using Quality of Life Index questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 60.07 ± 11.07 years. The prevalence of diabetic foot ulcer was 17.40% and the patients with mean age group of 55.5 ± 03.03 years were more prone to diabetic foot ulcer. Majority of the patients were having hypertension as a comorbid disease. The overall quality of life was 17.44 ± 1.50 before patient counseling and 21.02 ± 2.12 after patient counseling. Conclusion: The present study concluded that participants had average levels of overall quality of life. The quality of life could be improved through the patient education regarding their disease condition.
