Abstract

SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC ESTIMATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF SIEGESBECKIA ORIENTALIS PLANT EXTRACTS BY HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SCAVENGING METHOD

Vanna Manjusha and Manasa Merugu*

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to estimate and compare the antioxidant activity of the methanolic and chloroform extracts of Siegesbeckia orientalis. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between generation of free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize and eliminate them. Oxidative stress is one of the important factors affecting the human health. Many traditional plants were being investigated for their antioxidant property. The free radical scavenging activity was found to be high in methanolic extract for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radical in a concentration dependent manner compared to chloroform extract. The IC50 value of methanolic extract was found to be lesser compared to chloroform extract indicating its potential to inhibit the oxidizing property of H2O2. The content of flavonoids was also found to be high in methanolic extract which may be correlated to its antioxidant activity. Thus the result suggests that the methanolic extract of S.orientalis could serve as a potential source of antioxidants and can be explored as a therapeutic agent in free radical induced diseases.

Keywords: Free radicals, Siegesbeckia orientalis; Antioxidants, Flavonoids, Scavenging activity.
