EMERGING ROLE OF SERUM MAGNESIUM IN DIABETES MELLITUS

Dr. Nipun Saproo, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar and Dr. Ashima Badyal*

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorder and leading cause of death and disability in the world. The incidence of diabetes has increased globally and on an even larger proportion in India. Globally, there were 382 million people living with diabetes in 2013, a further 316 million with impaired glucose tolerance were at high risk from the disease – a number that is set to reach 471 million by 2035. The disease leads to many complications and one of them is electrolyte imbalance which has been an ignored subject yet. Amongst the electrolytes, magnesium merits special attention. The aim of the present study was to assess serum magnesium levels in Type 2 Diabetics. A hospital based cross sectional study of one year was performed on 100 diabetic patients attending the OPD of medicine department, Government Medical College, Jammu and 60 age match healthy controls. Blood was withdrawn and serum magnesium levels were estimated by Isocitrate Dehydrogenase enzymatic method by Abott ARCHITECT on fully automatic analyzer. It was observed that maximum number of patients was found in the age group of 46-60 years and that the most prevalent levels of serum magnesium encountered was 1.67 mg/dl, confirming the finding that the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have significantly lower levels of magnesium. It is therefore advisable to include the serum magnesium levels in the routine electrolyte panel for the better management of diabetes mellitus and future research.
