ABSTRACT

Artilon Soft Gel Capsule – an oil based herbal combination was investigated for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity at the different doses in the standard animal models to evaluate its toxicity. The experimental paradigms used were carrageenan induced rat paw oedema in rats for anti-inflammatory activity and Eddy’s hot plate method in mice for analgesic activity. The chronic toxicity was performed for the drug by oral administration. Artilon Soft Gel Capsule exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effect at the dose 3.6mg/kg, maximum inhibition 79.9 % was noted after 2hours of drug treatment in carrageenan induced paw oedema in anti-inflammatory, whereas at the same time Indomethacine (standard drug) produced 24.33% of inhibition. Analgesic activity shows the optimum latency at the doses of 3.6 mg/kg in 19.76 minutes after the treatment. The Artilon further evaluated for chronic toxicity effect at different doses of 7.2, 14.4 and 28.8mg/kg administered for 180 days to orally in rats. The effect of medicine was assessed by the change in the body weight, lipid per oxidation and hepatic key enzyme activities were measured from serum and hepatic tissues. The hematological profile and different biochemical parameters such as glucose, protein, and kidney function test were also estimated. All the parameters were shown as normal i.e, the medicine was free from toxicity. The present study revealed that the Artilon Soft Gel Capsule exhibited significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity in the tested models. The toxicity study indicates that the drug is non-toxic at the higher doses.
