Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF OXALIS CORNICULATA IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Dr. Arijit Dutta*, Dr. Mangala Lahkar and Dr. Chimi Handique

ABSTRACT

Background: Oxalis Corniculata is traditionally well known for its versatile uses. The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant property of ethanolic extract of Oxalis corniculata in Streptozotocin induced diabetic albino rats. Method: The albino rats were divided into 5 groups, each consisting of 6 animals. Diabetes was induced by a single i.p. injection of streptozotocin at a dose of 50mg/kg body weight. Standard drug, glibenclamide and ethanolic extract of Oxalis corniculata (EEOC) at doses200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight was fed to the rats and it was continued till the end of the study. After 4 weeks of treatment with the extract all the rats were anaesthesized with Ketamine (50mg/kg i.p.) and then sacrificed by cervical dislocation. The right and left sciatic nerves were rapidly excised; cleaned and homogenized using micro pestle in phosphate buffer (1:10 ratio).Homogenate was centrifuged and the resulting supernatant was used for the estimation of lipid peroxidation product Malonyldialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant parameters Reduced glutathione (GSH), Catalase and Superoxide dismutase (SOD). Results: The extract has been able to decrease the level of lipid peroxidation product MDA and increase the level of antioxidants GSH, SOD and Catalase. The antioxidant property has shown an increased effect with an increase in dose of the extract. Conclusion: Results obtained in this study substantiate the anti-oxidant activity of EEOC leaves in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats.
