Abstract

SCREENING THE BIOFUNGICIDAL PROPERTY AND GCMS ANALYSIS OF LANTANA CAMARA

Deepika Srivastava* and Padma Singh

ABSTRACT

Plants are the rich reservoir of biological active compounds to combat various pathogen. These biological active compounds could be tapped out for the betterment of humans. Plant based fungicides appear to be one of the better alternative as they are known to have minimal environmental impact and danger to consumers in contrast to synthetic fungicides. The present investigation was an approach towards the development of ecofriendly antifungal compound from Lantana camara for controlling late blight disease of onion (Allium cepa) caused by Alternaria alternata and GCMS analysis of the best extract. Four different extracts of Lantana camara (leaves) were prepared using four different solvents viz Aqueous, methanol, acetone and ethanol. These extracts were analyzed for antifungal activity against Alternaria alternata isolated from onion (Allium cepa) by food poison technique. Among the four extracts ethanolic extract completely inhibited the growth, which was followed by acetonic (95.68%), methanolic (83.33%) and aqueous (5.5%) which gave minimum activity. As ethanol showed best result its MIC and MFC was carried out. MIC and MFC of ethanolic extract for the test organism was 12.5 mg/ml and 25 mg/ml respectively. GCMS of ethanolic extract of Lantana camara was also carried out which revealed the presence of Trans Squalene (17.51%), Phytol (11.39%), Diisobutylpthalate (5.41%), Caryophyllene (4.09%), Neophytadiene (3.84%), Stigmast-5- En-3-ol (3 beta) (3.13%) as major compounds. The present study provides the insight that Lantana camara ethanolic, acetonic and methanolic extract can be used for the development of novel herbal fungicidal formulations after in –vivo and field trials.
