Abstract

POTENTIOMETRIC STUDIES OF SALICYLIC ACID WITH IT’S VALIDATION IN PHARMACEUTICALS

Sanjay A. Patil and Bhata R. Chaudhari*

ABSTRACT

Acid-base titration of Salicylic acid is rapid, reproducible and permits its determination in pharmaceutical applications. The electrode systems vary with the solvent employed. The platinum-calomel electrode system is suitable where the solvent is 0.1 N NaOH solution which is used in acid-base titration. Salicylic acid is the titrant while the glass-calomel electrode system is suitable where the solvent is 0.1N NaOH solution. Titration of Salicylic acid in acid base solvents was carried out. Procedure was followed for titration of salicylic acid with validation as Specificity, precision, linearity and accuracy in media like standard 0.1 N NaOH solutions using platinum-calomel as well as glass-calomel electrode system. The equivalence point was located as accurately as possible by a differential graph of ΔE/ΔV or ΔpH/ΔV against added volume and concentration of test solution was computed. Every where the acid-base titration used for validation study.

Keywords: 0.1N NaOH solution, Salicylic acid, Calomel electrode, Validation, Potentiometer.
