ABSTRACT

The study; has been designed to evaluate the anti-anxiety effect of Psidium guajava leaves by using plus-maze model and light dark model on mice (Swiss albino). The phytochemical screening of the plant revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavanoids, triterpenoids, carbohydrates and sterols. The two extracts of the plant (Ethanolic and Hydroalcoholic) are administered po to the mice, at a dose of 200 mg/kg. The activity of extracts was compared with Diazepam, used as a standard drug. The observations made are as follows: Ethanolic (PGEE) and Hydro alcoholic extract (PGHE) at a dose of 200 mg/kg shows maximum and statistically significant anxiolytic effect. We found that the extracts of Psidium guajava increased the percentage of open arm entries in plus maze model and the percentage of light area entries in light dark model. So it is concluded that the plant extracts justified its traditional use as an anti-anxiety. Also it is revealed that the ethanolic extract at a dose of 200mg/kg shows statistically significant anxiolytic effect in comparison with hydro alcoholic extract.

Keywords: Anti-anxiety effect, ethanolic extract, anxiolytic effect, plus maze model, light dark model.
