Abstract

SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF SCHIFF AND MANNICH BASES OF ISATIN DERIVATIVES

P. Jothi Rani*, Dr. M. Sundara Pandiyan, A. Senthamil Selvi, A. Aruna and N. Venkatesan

ABSTRACT

In the present study, a series of Schiff and Mannich bases of Isatin derivatives were synthesized by condensation of Imesatin with different aromatic aldehydes. The Imesatin were synthesized by Isatin with p-phenylene diamine. The Mannich base was synthesized by reacting Schiff base with p-formaldehyde and secondary amine (piperazine). All the synthesized compounds have been confirmed by IR, 1HNMR, and MASS spectroscopy analysis. These compounds were screened for antibacterial (B.subtilis, B.cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, P.vulgaris) and antifungal (Aspergillus niger) activities by cup plate method. The SM-4 and SM-6 compound has more effective in antibacterial activity. The SM-6 compound has best antifungal activity. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the compounds were also determined by tube dilution method. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the compound shows range of 62.5-125 (μg/ml).

Keywords: Isatin, Schiff base, Mannich base, Antibacterial, Antifungal.
