Abstract

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF QUALITY OF LIFE OF EBERCONAZOLE VERSUS TERBINAFINE IN PATIENTS OF TINEA VERSICOLOR

Kaushal J, Sharma J* and Aggarwal K.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Tinea versicolor is characterized by appearance of maculosquamous lesions associated with erythema, scaling and pruritis in characteristic areas of body. It has a negative impact on quality of life particularly among young adults. It affects the psychosocial well being of the affected individuals, leading to personal feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem, embarrassment and shame. This study was done to compare the quality of life of eberconazole versus terbinafine in patients of tinea versicolor. Material and Methods: A prospective, open label, randomized, comparative clinical study was conducted on 60 patients. The patients were randomly divided into two study groups. Group A: Eberconazole 1% cream once daily and Group B: Terbinafine 1% cream once daily for 2 weeks. QOL assessment was done by DLQI Questionnaire by Finlay and Khan over a period of 2 weeks and the patients were reassessed at the end of 4 & 8 weeks for any relapse. Three domains i.e. emotional, social and physical domain were assessed. Results: There was statistically significant improvement in QOL parameters, in all the three domains in both the groups over a period of 2 weeks and there was no relapse at the end of 4 & 8 weeks. On comparing both the groups at 2 weeks, better improvement was seen with eberconazole as compared to terbinafine in composite QOL score (68.03% versus 63.74%), but this was not statistically significant. There was statistically significant better improvement in the social domain score with eberconazole than terbinafine at the end of week 2 (p=0.013). Conclusion: Although both the drugs improved QOL, eberconazole showed better results.

Keywords: Tinea versicolor, Eberconazole, Terbinafine.
