ABSTRACT

Background: Breast cancer a multifactorial disease with its uncertain etiology remains as one of the most dreaded of human diseases that claims the lives of thousands of women all over the globe every year. This may probably be due to the fact that it remains undiagnosed at an early stage perhaps because of the lack of awareness amongst the females and the fact that most cancers do not produce any symptoms until the tumours are too large to be removed surgically. Objectives: The study was aimed at assessing the Serum Adenosine Deaminase (ADA), Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), acid phosphatase (ACP), GGT (gamma glutamyl transpeptidase), Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and lipid profile in patients with breast cancer. Methods: Enzyme activities, and serum levels of various lipid parameter, i.e. triglycaddes, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL), ware measured in a total were determined in 65 women with breast cancer and 65 age-matched controls using enzymatic methods. Results: The serum ADA (p<0.001), LDH (p < 0.001), GGT (p< 0.001), ACP (p<0.05) and SOD (p<0.006) activities were significantly higher in the study group than in the control group. Also the results demonstrated significantly (p<0.001) higher values of triglyceride, LDL, cholesterol in breast cancer in comparison with control group. Conclusion: Highest activities of enzymes could be helpful in early diagnosis of the disease.

Keywords: Breast cancer, Liver enzymes, Serum lipids profile.
