ABSTRACT
Objectives: The ethanolic extract of the leaves of Artemisia indica was screened for anti diarrheal effects. Materials and methods: The extract was evaluated for castor oil- induced diarrhoea and intestinal transit in rats. Results: Artemisia indica significantly (p<0.05) and dose-dependently reduced frequency of stooling in castor oil-induced diarrhoea and intestinal transit in rats. The oral LD50 values obtained were greater than 2000mg/ kg in mice. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the ethanolic extract of the leaves of Artemisia indica may contain some biologically active ingredients that are effective for the treatment of diarrhoea in China herbal traditional medicine.
