Abstract

EXTRACTION, CHARACTERIZATION AND ASSESSMENT OF THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF THE TISSUE EXTRACT OF SEPIA BREVIMANA FROM GULF OF MANNAR

ABSTRACT

The present study has been carried out to find the antibacterial and antifungal activity of different solvent tissue extracts of Sepia brevimana. Five bacterial strains namely Streptococcus sps, E.coli, Citrobacter sps, Bacillus sps, Enterobacter sps and four fungal strains namely Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternata and Cladosporium were used for the study. The tissue extract of Sepia brevimana showed antibacterial activity with the inhibition zones ranging from 1mm to 8mm. The highest activity of 8mm was recorded against E- coli in the methanolic extract and a minimum inhibition zone of 1mm against Citrobacter sps. and Enterobacter sps in the methanolic and benzene extract. Antifungal activity of Sepia brevimana tissue extracts ranging from 1mm to 9mm. The maximum inhibition zone of 9mm was observed against Aspergillus flavus and Cladosporium in the methanol and hexane extract whereas minimum inhibition zone of 1mm was recorded against Alternaria alternata in benzene extract. GC-MS analysis of body tissue of Sepia brevimana exhibited twelve peaks, with the retention times ranging from 4.949 to 16.969 minutes. Among the compounds identified Cholesterol was the most abundant compound (66.71%) present in the methanolic tissue extract of Sepia brevimana.
