Jonata Augusto de Oliveira and Mauricio Alexandre Reis Junior*

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most health problems in world. It is estimated that in 2013 about 382 million adults worldwide had diabetes. Diabetes, long-term, causes various health problems such as angiopathies, cardiovascular problems, renal failure, neuropathies, blindness, increased formation of reactive species of oxygen and risk of cancer. Currently, there are several antidiabetic drugs such as inhibitors of α-glucosidase, intestinal lipase, dipeptyl peptidase-4, human insulin, incretin analogues, biguanides, insulin secretagogues and insulin sensitizers. However, these drugs cause various adverse effects such as gastrointestinal problems, hypoglycemia and body weight gain. Therefore, the use of natural substances such as resveratrol may help in the treatment of diabetes. The objective of this review is extends our knowledge about the mechanisms of action of resveratrol and analogues for treatment of diabetics.

Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, reactive species of oxygen, insulin, resveratrol.
