Madiha Nooreen*, Tarannum, Shereen Fatima and Romana Fatima

ABSTRACT

The ingestion of corrosive substances is a medical emergency with varied clinical presentations that may progress towards a complicated clinical course. The UGI injuries are the common source that causes mortality in India. However, due to the absence of a well established reporting system the epidemiological data available in our country is inadequate. And insufficient regulation on the sales of corrosive substances add to the burden. Acute poisoning damages the gastrointestinal mucosa, most common being the upper GIT. The extent and degree of damage depends upon factors like type of chemical compound, quantity and the active principle. Depending upon the extent of injury to mucosa, the poisoning is classified into 4 stages. The case can further became complicated due to perforation or obstruction of UGI and airway. Here we present a case of young female who had ingested small quantity of an acid that lead to grade 3b injuries to UGI tract which further developed into an esophageal stricture.

Keywords: corrosive acid, corrosive substances, acid burns, endoscopy, esophageal stricture.
