Abstract

HYPOLIPIDEMIC EFFECT OF PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L. AT VARIOUS DOSES AND ITS IMPACT ON CARDIOVASCLUAR DISEASE

Dr. Shoaib Alam, Dr. Afshan Siddiq*, Dr. Muhammad Mohtasheemul Hasan

ABSTRACT

Hyperlipidemia is the major underlying cause of cardiovascular disease. To reduce the risk for developing cardiovascular disease the target is to lower down the blood cholesterol level. And the blood cholesterol could be reduced by blocking the absorption of cholesterol from gastrointestinal tract or block the pathway responsible for the production of endogenous cholesterol in the body. The aim of this study is to evaluate the lipid lowering capability of Phaseolus vulgaris L. at low, moderate and high dose, administered for period of 30 days. The results revealed, the reduction in serum cholesterol, LDL and VLDL at low, moderate and high dose after the completion of dosing period and increase in the level of HDL cholesterol is also observed. Abnormal plasma levels of lipids are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Even though statins are so helpful in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, large number of health organizations have affirmed that the very best approach to the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease is to improve dietary habits and lifestyle. Cholesterol is risk factor for cardiovascular diseases because it has been demonstrated that reduction in plasma concentration of LDL-cholesterol lower downs the risk of both cardiovascular disease and overall mortality associated with cardiovascular disease.
