ABSTRACT

Background: a high serum alkaline phosphatase (PAO) and (TRAP5b) level is valuable for the diagnosis of primary bone tumors in adults, and teenagers. PAO and TRAP5b levels are affected by age, gender, and pubertal stage. We presumed that serum levels of PAO and TRAP5b would have a strong correlation and would be useful for the diagnosis of bone tumors in teenagers. Aim: this study was to evaluate the correlation between the serum levels of PAO and TRAP5b and to investigate the validity in the differential diagnosis of bone tumors in children and adolescents. Methods: this is an prospective study, we examined 40 patients admitted to our hospital of Constantine named benbadis in the north of Algeria Between from January 19, 2014 to January 03, 2015, aged 5–20 years, including 34 with osteosarcoma, 6 with Ewing’s sarcoma, and with 100 controls. We evaluated the serum levels of PAO and TRAP5b, both obtained by preoperative examination. Results: There were significant correlations between the serum PAO and TRAP5b levels in the patients (r = 0.705) (p = 0.005) in males and (r = 0.780) (p = 0.0067) in females, There were also significant correlations between TRAP5b levels and PAO in controls (r = 0.809), (p = 0.008), in male (r = 0.790), (p = 0.02), in females. The level of PAO and TRAP5b have strong relation with age and they are always higher in female than the males in the patients and controls. Conclusions. The results suggest that PAO and TRAP5b is useful in the confirmation of diagnosing of primary bone tumors in children and teenagers and adult.

Keywords: PAO, TRAP5b, primary bone tumors.
