Abstract

IN VITRO ANTI-OXIDANT AND THROMBOLYTIC ACTIVITY OF ELAEOCARPUS GANITRUS BARK EXTRACTS

Arya Lakshmi Marisetti* and Srinivas Kolli

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the In-vitro anti-oxidant and Thrombolytic activity of Elaeocarpus ganitrus of bark extracts. The plant Elaeocarpus ganitrus roxb (Elaeocarpaceae) commonly known as Rudraksha the king of herbal medicines. The leaves, fruits, seeds and stems of the plant have been used widely in traditional folk medicine in many parts of India. In the information regarding the use of bark of Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb for several disorders systemic in vitro studies were carried out in our laboratory to establish the anti-oxidant activity by DPPH free radical scavenging assay and Thrombolytic activity by clot lysis method. The In-vitro free radical scavenging activity was recorded by DPPH method using various concentrations of extracts (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 μg/ml) against blank with ascorbic acid as a standard. The Percentage inhibition in DPPH radical scavenging activity of chloroform extract was found to be 78.12±1.44 as compare to standard ascorbic acid 82.12±1.01 at 16μg/ml. For Thrombolytic activity, the aqueous and chloroform extract showed 59.1% and 62.1% respectively where as methanolic extracts shows 48.2%.Addition of 100 μl Streptokinase has showed 71.7% clot lysis. However, distilled water (negative control) shown only negligible clot lysis 22.85%. The mean difference in clot lysis percentage between positive and negative control was significant (p value < 0.001). The percentage of clot lysis by different bark extracts of E.ganitrus was statistically more significant when compared to those of both positive and negative control. Hence, it can be concluded that the E.ganitrus bark could be pharmaceutically exploited for antioxidant and Thrombolytic properties.
