Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIBACTERIAL POTENTIAL OF CADMIUM OXIDE NANOPARTICLES AGAINST SOME BACTERIAL PATHOGENS

Rashid Rahim Hateet, *Ahmad Khadhim Hachim and Haidar Gazy Lazim.

ABSTRACT

Evolving infectious diseases and the increase in incidence of antibiotics resistance among pathogenic bacteria have made the search for new antimicrobials predictable. In the current situation, one of the promising and novel therapeutic agents could be the nanoparticles. In this study, antimicrobial susceptibility testing of CdO nanoparticles was done against Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacellus cereus. The antibacterial activity of the nanoparticles was assessed by well diffusion method. The tested concentration range of CdO nanoparticles was 100mg/ml and activity was determined by measuring the zone of inhibition. After the preliminary antibacterial qualitative test, the MIC and MBC was determined. CdO nanoparticles were more effective with MIC range 0.078-0.52mg/ml. The highest activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus with MIC 0.078 mg/ml and E. coli was least susceptible with MIC 0.83 mg/ml. X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy with EDAX analysis have been used to charactctrize the cadmium oxide nanoparticles.

Keywords: CdO nanoparticles. Antibacterial Potential. Bacterial Pathogens.
