Abstract

STUDY OF DERMATOGLYPHIC PATTERNS IN NORTH INDIAN ADULT POPULATION

ABSTRACT

The study of fingerprints as a method of identification is also known as Dactylography or Dactyloscopy, and currently it is also known as the Henry-Galton system of identification. Recently, Interest has been developed to know the association with dermatoglyphics and various medical and genetic disorders. Aims & objectives: The aims of study to identify dermatoglyphic traits of North Indian population residing in Lucknow. Material & Methods: The 150 adult subjects were enrolled in study from the Campus of Integral University and IIMS & R Hospital Lucknow. To record the fingertip patterns, Modified Purvis-Smith ink method was applied with use of ink pad and A4 size white papers. Finger prints were classified as ulnar loop, radial loop, whorl, plane arch and tented arch. Results: The LOOPS are most common pattern, (62.26%); in both right (61.19% and 66.67%) and left hand (56.90% and 66.06%) in males and females respectively; followed by WHORLS, (30.26%); in both right ( 29.04% and 25.45%) and left hand (37.38% and 27.57%) and ARCHES, (7.46%) in right (9.76% and 7.87%) and left hand (5.71% and 6.36%) in males and females respectively. Conclusion: Loops are most common finger print pattern in right and left hand of both sex followed by whorls, and arches were the least common pattern. In specific distribution, ulnar loop is most common in both hands of both sexes followed by plain whorl.
