ABSTRACT

Objective: The objective of this study is to discover the major pathogen involved in causing UTI infections, and susceptibility patterns of antimicrobial agents currently used in Pakistan. Methodology: Our study analyzed the medical records of patients, the data for the study was collected from different health care centers including hospitals and laboratories. A total of (n=112) urine c/s was analyzed from different cities of Pakistan including Karachi, Peshawar and Rawalpindi. Urinary isolates of UTI cases and the antibiotics susceptibility testing for the particular individuals were carefully investigated. Result: A total of 172 urine samples were studies, patients were between the age group from newborn to 80 years of age, and most cases of UTI were recorded among old age (50-80). Results are shown in the form of graphs and tables. Conclusion: It is concluded that patients with age group between (50-80) are at high risk of producing urinary tract infections, in majority of patients E.coli was the cause of disease, however staphylococcus aureus and klebsiela species were also commonly found, while according to susceptibility pattern ampicillin was highly resistant in all age groups along with amoxicillin in combination with clavulanic acid, where as ceftrixone was highly resistant in two age groups i.e (newborn-19) and (49-80), at the same time imipenem and meropenem is highly susceptible in all the age groups along with teicoplanin (highly sensitive between n-19), gentamycin (highly sensitive between 20-49) and amikacin (highly sensitive between 49-80).

Keywords: urinary tract infection, UTI causing pathogens, pathogenesis of UTI, antibiotic susceptibility of UTI patients
