ABSTRACT

Siddha medicine is a unique one as it is not only a curative but also preventive and to achieve the healthy body and mind. Siddha medicines revitalize and rejuvenate the body. Though Siddha system has its own value the concern on availability of physicochemical and standardization data of most of the siddha formulation is high doubtful. Globally, there have been concerted efforts to monitor quality and regulate the growing business of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani (ASU) drugs and traditional medicine. It has been estimated that 70-80% of world’s population relies on traditional healthcare. As a consequence of focusing upon the current need of drug standardization the present work undertaken to standardize the traditional herbo-mineral siddha formulation Singi Chenduram which has been used for the treatment of various ailment. So far there is no proper literature evidence available on standardization aspect of this formulation this prompted us to peruse the systematic standardization of Singi Chenduram using FTIR, DSC-TG and XRD techniques in order to generate the evidence based data about this noble formulation. The result obtained from FT-IR spectral study shows the presence of surface hydroxyl groups, alcohols, phenols, aldehydes aliphatic amines and alkyl halides in the formulation Singi Chenduram which has biologically significant properties. Data obtained from DSC-TG analysis justifies the thermal stability of SC at 400oC. Reports of XRD study confirm the presence of Lead (II) oxide (PbO) and Arsenic trioxide (As2O3). Hence from the results of the present investigation it was concluded that siddha formulation Singi Chenduram has biologically significant functional groups that may render valuable therapeutic activity and presence of PbO and As2O3 which synergistically enhance the therapeutic activity of Singi Chenduram as ailment for treating wide range of infectious diseases.
