ABSTRACT

Anxiety is a psychological disorder characterised by persistent and disproportionate fear unrelated to any genuine risk. Apart from very few chemicals remedies available like benzodiazepines and serotonin modulators, not much treatment options are at hand that could safely and effectively alleviate anxiety. The ethanol and aqueous extract of the leaf of plant Drypetes roxburghii was evaluated for its anti-anxiety activity in Swiss Albino Mice at dose of 500 mg/kg body weight. Anti-anxiety activity was assessed by using elevated plus maze and light and dark model methods. Both extracts exhibit anxiolytic effect in experimental mice. However the ethanolic extract shown effective anxiolytic activity than that of the aqueous extract Drypetes roxburghii. So it supports the use of Drypetes roxburgii as anxiolytic agents. Further investigations should be made to elucidate the active constituent of responsible for the activity.

Keywords: Anxiety, Anxiolytic activity, Dryptes roxburghii, Elevated plus maze.
