ABSTRACT
The present study was planned to investigate the microbial inhibitory effects of Withania somnifera leaves. The preliminary successive solvent extraction and chemical test revealed the presence of secondary metabolites in various solvent extracts. Microbial inhibitory effects has provide us clue for further investigation. Chloroform extract was used for investigation of inhibition on five pathogenic bacterial strains and done by broth dilution methods with triplicate. Tetracycline used as positive control and double distilled water was used as Negative control. Statistical analysis was done by Mean ± Standard Deviation with range, in which n=5 and one way ANOVA done with SPSS 20.0, in which p values were considered significant at 95% confidence
intervals (p<0.05). The antimicrobial activity best results against B. thruengenesis and C. diphtheria and average effect against S. typhi, C pneumonia and P. aeruginosa. The plant leaves have shown the presence of alkaloids, flavanoids, steroids and anthroquinone. As we calculate that Withania leaf chloroform extract may be diluted with 5 mg/ml to get 12.96 activity against B. thruengenesis and C. diphtheria and 10 mg/ml to get 6.48 activity against S.typhi, C.pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa. We found that Withania somnifera leaves chloroform extract shows the very best inhibitory effect against all tested pathogenic bacteria. But B. thruengenesis and C. diphtheria were very sensitive with Withania leaves. It has shown the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and anthroquinone, which is responsible to show antimicrobial, immunomodulatory effect. Withania leaves have shown a high level of activity against tested pathogenic strains. It will be beneficial to investigate the active constitute present in the Withania somnifera leaves to increase the therapeutic uses.
