Abstract

SCREENING OF ANTINOCICEPTIVE ACTIVITY ON BUTANOL FRACTION OF WHOLE PLANT OF CISSUS QUADRANGULARIS

ABSTRACT

Background: Throughout the history, man has used several forms of therapy for relief of pain; among them, medicinal herbs have gained popularity because of its wide use and less side effects. The whole plant of Cissus quadrangularis, is a commonly used folklore medicinal herb in India to hasten the fracture healing process; in Cameroon, the whole plant is used for the treatment of oral dehydration, while in Africa and Asia, the leaves, stems and roots are utilized for the treatment of various ailments. Methods: The plant extract were prepared by using methanol, macerated for 15 days with occasional stirring and concentrated under dry vacuum. and the crude extract was fractionated with butanol, The butanol fraction of Cissus quadrangularis was examined for Antinocicieptive activity by using the hot plate method, formalin and acetic acid-induced writhing methods in mice. The doses administered were 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg respectivey. The animal that administered both 250 and 500 mg/kg.b.wt but the 500mg/kg showed significant antinociceptive activity respectivey. which is comparable to the standard.Results. Administration of butanol fraction of Cissus quandragularis at doses of 250 and 500 mg per kg body weight lead to reductions in the number of writhings in mice induced by intraperitoneal administration of acetic acid and formalin respectively, Conclusion. Butanol fraction of Cissus quandragularis were effective in reduction of pain in intraperitoneally induced acetic acid and formalin to mice.
