ABSTRACT

Mood disorders are mental health disorder that involves emotional disturbances consisting of long periods of excessive sadness, excessive happiness or elation or both. This includes Depression, Mania, Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia Affective Disorder. In recent years WHO states that the rate of serious morbidity and mortality of population effected with mental illness has accelerated. Compared to general population the persons who are younger die due to serious mental illness i.e. persons are dying 25years earlier than general population. This single blinded interventional research was performed in Department of Psychiatry, Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital (RMMCH) over 75 patients to study prescribing pattern i.e., drugs prescribed per prescription and in generics, drugs prescribed according to WHO essential drug list and TN list; to study medication adherence of patients using MORISKY 8_ITEM MEDICATION ADHERENCE QUESTIONNAIRES, providing patient care as patient counselling, patient leaflet etc. This research study concluded that for mood disorders, Haloperidol (82.68%) was the most commonly prescribed drug following Promethazine (78.6%) and Carbamazepine(38.6%) being the least. Monotherapy 61.3% was most commonly prescribed treatment followed by Polytherapy 38.7%. Out of 398 drugs prescribed, 158(39.6%) were in generic name, 40% drugs as per WHO list and 66.6% drugs in TN list. Our study shows that 59% was always adherent and 37% was mostly adherent to medication. Out of 75, 17 patients (22.6%) experienced adverse drug reactions.
