ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the antibacterial properties of sequential extracts of Sargassum wightii, Kappaphycus alvarezii and Ulva fasciata. Methods: Sargassum wightii, Kappaphycus alvarezii and Ulva fasciata were subjected to sequential extraction using methanol, chloroform, hexane and ethyl acetate. Antibacterial properties of each extract were done. To identify the phytoconstituents present in the best activity showed extract. Results: Among the various extracts Sargassum wightii methanol extract was found to possess higher antibacterial potential than other sequential extraction products and phytochemical profiling of Sargassum wightii methanolic extract showed the presence of various secondary metabolities with varied degree such as carbohydrates, phenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, triterpenoids, coumarins and alkaloids. Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that Sargassum wightii methanol extract alone had notable antibacterial property that can be potentially exploited as an important antibacterial drug against many dread full bacteria’s.

Keywords: Seaweeds, phytoconstiuents and disc diffusion assay.
