Abstract

INVITRO ANTIBACTERIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF JASMINE LEAF EXTRACT (JASMINUM SAMBAC L)

Shirly Kumala* and Herry Santoso

ABSTRACT

Jasmine tree ( Jasminum sambac L.) was one of the many ornament plants which also used as traditional herbal medicine by the Indonesian community. Most commonly, jasmine leaves were applied on skin to treat acne and swollen skin resulted from insect bites; then it was also applied on the eye to cure red eye infections; and when taken orally, jasmine leaf can cure diarrhoea, influenza and fever. In the current study, extraction of jasmine leaf was performed via maceration in three solvents n-hexane (n-Hex), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH). This yield an extract which were then used in two in vitro tests. They were the antibacterial test using the agar diffusion method on paper disc and DDPH test to determine anti oxidant activity of the extract. Bacterial type used in the test were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. The results showed that EtOAc extract has zone inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus (7.0 to 11.67mm), Staphylococcus epidermis (9.0 to 12.33mm), Escherichia coli (9.0 to 13.0mm), Salmonella typhimurium (7.0 to 11.67mm). The antioxidant activity of this extract demonstrated an IC50 of 11.433ug/ml. The methanol extract of these jasmine leaves however, showed weaker antioxidant activity when compared to the EtOAc extract (IC50 of 13.653 ug/ml); and for the bacterial activity against staphylococcus aureus (7.0 to 12.33mm), Staphylococcus epidermis (7.67 to11.67mm), Escherichia coli (7.0 to 13.33 mm) and Salmonella typhimurium (7.67 to 10.33mm). In conclusion, the current research study presented evidence that both MeOH and EtOAc jasmine leaf extract has broad spectrum bacterial activity. while EtOAc extract has stronger antioxidant activity than the MeOH extract
