Abstract

HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF RHIZOME OF DRYOPTERIS COCHLEATA

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Dryopteris cochleata rhizome extract against liver injury induced by paracetamol. Albino rats of two different groups were administered with paracetamol (2g/Kg/p.o) on the fifth day, after the administration of EDC (100 and 200mg/Kg/p.o.) respectively for 7 days and compared with a group of rats administered with paracetamol (2g/Kg/p.o.), for 7 days as a control group. Silymarin (100 mg/Kg) was used as a standard drug which was given another group of animal. After 7 days animals were anaesthetized with ether for collection of blood from retro orbital plexus, and then sacrificed under ether anesthesia for the removal of liver. Various biochemical analyses (Serum billirubin, SGPT, SGOT, ALP) were carried out. Liver enzymes were increased after administration with paracetamol. Treatment with EDC extract reduces the level of liver enzymes. Simultaneously, the histological deteriorative effects of paracetamol intoxication were also improved after treatments with this extract.
