ABSTRACT
4-carboxy-3-pentyl-isocoumarin and 3-pentyl-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one was synthesized in excellent yields by the reaction of homophthalic anhydride with caproic anhydride using pyridine as a catalyst, followed by rearrangement of 4-pentyl-isochroman-1,3-dione with Conc. Sulphuric acid. Further 4-carboxy-3-pentyl-isocoumarin, 3-pentyl-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one and 4-pentyl-isochroman-1,3-dione were individually reacted with ammonia and various primary amines to give respective Isoquinolones.
Keywords: Isocoumarins, Isoquinolones, homophthalic anhydride, caproic anhydride, pyridine
