ABSTRACT

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of the methanolic extract of Kigelia Africana on gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity. For nephrotoxicity, thirty rats were evenly divided into 5 groups. Groups I and II served as untreated and model controls, respectively while groups III-V were the treatment groups which were pretreated with 100-200 mg/kg bodyweight per day of Kigelia Africana 1 h before each dose of the nephrotoxicants. On the 8th day, blood samples for serum urea, total protein and creatinine and the rat kidneys for histopathology were obtained under inhaled diethyl ether anesthesia. The extract produced significant nephroprotective activity in Gentamycin induced nephrotoxicity model as evident by a decrease in elevated Serum creatinine, blood urea, and total protein which was further confirmed by histopathological study and calculated statistically to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of Kigelia Africana and the high dose 200mg/kg body weight of KA was found to more effective against the low dose 100mg/kg body weight of KA. From the result it was concluded that MEKA possesses nephroprotective activity against gentamycin induced nephrotoxicity in albino rats.

Keywords: Nephrotoxicity, Kigelia Africana, Nephroprotectivity, Gentamycin and Albino rats.
