ABSTRACT

Objective: Candida albicans is extremely common, local fungal infection but can become systemic and life-threatening in immune-compromised patients. Curcumin has been widely used for treatment of throat infection. A lozenge made by using gelatine does not have patient compliance due to its stability problem, low bioavailability & non-vegetarian nature. The objective of present study was to prepare a Curcumin Lozenges for treatment of Throat infection mainly used for paediatric, geriatric and dysphasic patients, which has increased stability, bioavailability and vegetarian nature. Method: Central Composite Design is used for optimization of formulation and subjected to evaluation for its hardness, friability, in vitro dissolution and Stability studies were carried according to ICH guidelines. Lozenges were prepared by melting and moulding method. Results: From the optimization study, amount of PEG-4000, Agar-agar and Kappa-carrageenan was determined. Optimized formulation showed hardness (10 kg/cm3), Drug content (98.30%), Friability (0.75%), In vitro dissolution study (97.79%) in 30 minutes (increased dissolution compared to gelatine lozenges), % moisture content (0.66%), and Antimicrobial activity, (passes the test). Stability study has shown that optimized formulation is stable under various accelerated condition of temperature & humidity. Conclusion: Here, Lozenges were prepared and it is passes the entire test within the standard range.

Keywords: Curcumin, Throat infection, Lozenges, Anti-microbial activity.
