ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial activity of Andrographis paniculata Nees. leaf extracts
on opportunistic pathogenic microbes, bacteria and fungi was observed
in this study. A.paniculata leaves were extracted by using soxhlet
apparatus method and three kinds of solvents: acetone, aqueous and
methanol. A. paniculata leaf extracts were tested against human
pathogenic microbes. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella
pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and fungi such
as Aspergillus conicus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger,
Aspergillus sulphureus by agar well diffusion method. All the leaf
extracts of A.paniculata exhibited greater activity towards bacteria and
fungi. The extract demonstrated higher activities against all the
bacteria and fungi tested, with the highest activity (acetone extract of
15 mm zone of inhibition) demonstrated against Salmonella typhi, it
was observed that, methanol extracts of whole plant and leaves showed the significant
antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and (methanol extract of 15 mm zone
of inhibition) demonstrated against Aspergillus conicus.A.paniculata may be used for the
treatment of fever like ckikunguny, swine –flu, typhoid, snake bite and common cold etc.
