ABSTRACT

The health center in Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Nigeria, registers a good number of patients suffering from urinary tract infection (UTI) daily. The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of gramnegative bacteria isolated from urine sample of some in-patients as well as out –patients in DELSU health centre suspected of having urinary tract infection was investigated using standard method. Thirty five (35) percent of the bacteria isolated were Escherichia coli strains (the greatest number recorded). The susceptibility testing showed that most of the organisms were sensitive to ofloxacin (95% of the organism), pefloxacin (85%), ciprofloxacin (90%), ceporex (70%) and nalixidic acid (60%) whereas few strains of E.coli , K.pneumonia, P.mirabilis and Enterobacter aerogenes were sensitive to septrin, ampicillin, penicillin and gentamicin and the remaining test isolates were resistant. The proven potent agentsofloxacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ceporex and nalixidic acid should therefore be prescribed whenever a case of UTI is suspected in the center pending the result of the culture and sensitivity tests.

Keywords: urinary tract infection, ofloxacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin, cepor.
