Abstract

IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF CALENDULA OFFICINALIS AND MIMOSA PUDICA

ABSTRACT

The study has been designed to investigate the antioxidant and anti inflammatory activities of Calendula officinalis (CO) flowers and Mimosa pudica (MP) leaves. Ethanolic extract of CO flowers was prepared by the process of maceration while MP leaves were defatted using petroleum ether and extract was prepared by using soxhlet apparatus. Phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of CO revealed the presence of flavonoids, carbohydrates, saponins, amino acids and phenols. On the other hand, presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, saponin and phenols have been confirmed in the phytochemical testing of MP ethanolic extract. In vitro antioxidant study was carried out by using DPPH method and anti inflammatory study was done by egg albumin method. Vitamin C and diclofenac potassium were taken as reference drug respectively. Extracts and standards were prepared in the concentration of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 ug/mL. It has been noted that antioxidant and anti inflammatory activity increased with increasing concentration in all drugs. Our study reports that IC50 value of antioxidant activity of CO, MP and vitamin C are 1.47, 1.40 and 1.47 respectively. IC50 value of MP demonstrates it to be most potent antioxidant. On the other hand, IC50 values of anti-inflammatory activity of CO, MP and diclofenac sodium were calculated to be 1.61, 1.63 and 1.48. However, based upon IC50 value diclofenac sodium has been noted to possess most potent anti inflammatory property. In nut shell, antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties of CO and MP can be used as a basis to alleviate various diseases.
