ABSTRACT

Lakes in and around urban areas are undoubtedly worst victims of rapid urbanization. The vanishing of lakes has cost detrimental impact on the environment. Nevertheless, the pollution stress on existing lakes be ignored nor the heavy encroachment be over looked. The scenario of Bangalore city is no exception. Today many of the lakes and tanks in this IT City have disappeared. The neglected lakes has triggered a whole spectrum of issues. These filthy, gasping lakes have affected societies and environment in several ways. Here, a case study of Bangalore’s Bhattrahalli Lake is investigated. The water samples were collected at 3 selected sampling sites, one at Bhattrahalli Village Inlet (East), Garden City College Inlet (West) another at the Center Zone of the Lake. Assessment of Physico- Chemical parameters of Bhattrahalli Lake was done during July 2015. The analysis was carried out for the parameters like Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Total Hardness (TH), Calcium, Magnesium, Chlorides, Sulphate, Sulphide, Electric Conductivity(EC), Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), Percent Sodium , Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Total Alkalinity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS),Turbidity, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Sodium, Potassium, Oil and Grease. Heavy metal was also analyzed. The results infer that Bhattrahalli Lake can be declared as “E” Class (used for Irrigation, Industrial cooling, Control waste disposal) of water according to classification as per primary water quality criteria for various uses laid on by CPCB.

Keywords: Bhattrahalli Lake, Physico- Chemical Parameter, Lake Pollution, Water analysis.
