ISOLATION AND SCREENING OF PECTINOLYTIC BACTERIA FROM THE MANGO FRUIT YARDS

ABSTRACT

Modern living produces unimaginable quantities of waste that become difficult to manage. The past decade, the concept of sustainable development has become entrenched in our social conscience inextricably linking the growth of global economy to the protection of resources and our environment. Mango peel is one of the major wastes from fruit processing industries, which posses considerable disposal problems and ultimately leads to environmental pollution. Bacteria play an important role in the degradation of pectins. Biodegradation of pectin occurs as a result of synergistic action of different extracellular enzymes. The enzymes that hydrolyse pectic substances are broadly known as pectolytic/pectinolytic enzymes or pectinases. The present investigation is on pectinolytic activities of Bacillus strain isolated from soils of decomposed fruit waste from mango processing industries.
