CHITOSAN NANOPARTICLES: A REVIEW

*Shweta Dwivedi, Alok Mahor and Dilip Chanchal

ABSTRACT

Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide prepared by the N-deacetylation of chitin. It has been widely used in food and bioengineering industries, including the encapsulation of active food ingredients, in enzyme immobilization, and as a carrier for controlled drug delivery, due to its significant biological and chemical properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, bioactivity, and polycationic nanoparticals have gained considerable attention in recent years as one of the most promising drugs delivery systems owing to their unique potentials via combining the different characteristics of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity with a nanoparticale. Several polymeric nanoparticulate system have been prepared and characterized in recent years. based on both natural and synthetic polymers, each with its own advantages and drawback s. among the natural polymers, chitosan has been studied extensively for prepration of nanoparticales. Chitosan nanopartical have been reported with different characteristics with respect to drug delivery. This review presents chitosan based nanoparticales in drug delivery.

Keywords: N-deacetylation, polycationic nanoparticals, hydrophilicity.
