PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF ROOT EXTRACT OF GOMPHRENA CELOSIOIDES IN ETHYLENE GLYCOL INDUCED UROLITHIATIC RATS

ABSTRACT
The aim of our presented study is to assess the effect of root extract of Gomphrena celosioides as preventive agent in experimentally induced urolithiasis model in rats. Rats were administered 2ml of 5% ethylene glycol (v/v) (EG) for 15 days to induce urolithiasis. In addition to this, aqueous and alcoholic root extract of G. celosioides of 250 and 500 mg/kg dose were administered along with ethylene glycol for 15 days. On 24 hours after 15 days, blood and urine samples were collected from individual rats and used for the estimation of Serum concentration BUN, Creatinine, Uric acid and Urine concentration Calcium, Magnesium, Oxalate and creatinine followed by kidney histopathology. The ethylene glycol feeding resulted in an increased level of all parameters evaluated compared to normal rats. All these
conditions were reversed with plant extract treatment. Histopathological analysis also showed that rats treated with ethylene glycol had large deposits of calcium oxalate crystals, and that deposits were reduced in rats treated with plant extract. These data suggest that G. celosioides root extract has a protective activity against urolithiasis.
