ABSTRACT

Introduction: Economies that are structurally flawed have inherent problems that culminate into rebellion, civil wars, riots, unrising, cases of homicide and other social deviant acts. An unstable economy eventually becomes a “disease” when it impacts on people‟s psychosocial well-being, which is the feature of the Jamaican economy. Objective: This papers addresses the gap in the literature by an evaluation of the economy and cases of murders and rape in order to examine whether the system is a disease and its outcomes are murder and rape. Materials and methods: The data for this study were sourced from various Jamaica Government Publications. The period for this work is from 1970 through to 2013 for rape and from 1960 to 2013 for homicide. The level of significance that is used to determine statistical significance is less than 5% (0.05) at the 2-tailed level of significance. Descriptive statistics were computed for rape, rape rate, exchange rate and homicide. Those were reported as mean±SD, with 95% confidence interval. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression was used to determine whether rape and carnal abuse rate, as well as selected macroeconomic variables are factors of the homicide rate in Jamaica and those factors that explain rape rate, as well as the strength of the relationship, using R2. Findings: A statistical relationship between the rape rate in Jamaica and the exchange rate of Jamaican to US dollars, with a non-linear function being the best explanation for the relationship (i.e., R2 = 0.689). The relationship between the homicide rate in Jamaica per 100,000 population and the exchange rate is a curvilinear one (i.e. two degree polynomial function) with the function accounting for 84.7% of the data – F =110.487, P < 0.0001. Four variables account for 88.4% of the variability in homicide rate – F[5, 16] = 24.290, P < 0.0001, Adjusted R2 = 84.7%, Durbin Watson 1.743). The four factors that influence homicide rate in Jamaica are lnpoverty rate, square exchange rate, unemployment rate and Real GDP growth. Poverty and Real GDP growth inversely affect the homicide rate in Jamaica, with the exchange rate and unemployment rate directly influenced by the homicide rate. Conclusion: The Jamaican economy is a disease called ecopharmodracosis as well as ecopsycarsogenic pathogen that emerges owing to structual flaws in the economic and social system. The people are, therefore, engulfed in psychological and psychiatric disorders arising from the structure of the economy and such social unequal system is creating the social deviance as homicide and rape.

Keywords: Ecopharmodracosis disease, ecopharmacology, ecopsycarsogenic disease, rape, psychology of economics, mortality, homicide, Jamaica.
