TOXICOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SHATAMULI MANDOOR, A POPULAR AYURVEDIC ORGANO-METALLIC FORMULATION

ABSTRACT
Shatamuli mandoor , an popular Ayurvedic formulation is being used since centuries in certain conditions but no toxicological report is available till date. In this context, repeated dose oral toxicity study of Shatamuli mandoor was performed in Wistar rats. In a 28 days study, 200 mg / kg b.w./day, 800 mg / kg b.w./day and 1600 mg / kg b.w./day doses resulted had no mortality. Whereas the serum SGPT level of treated groups significantly decreased (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group, however all values were within normal range. The values of serum creatinine and serum alkaline phosphatase have been decreased significantly ( p<0.05) in treated group of 800 mg / kg b.w./day in compared to control group. Gross necropsy examination had revealed that the trial drug had no treatment related lesions. Histopathological evaluation of 1600mg/kg/day dose
group had no significant changes when compared with the control group. This study has established that the test drug, i.e Shatamuli mandoor containing iron ore and other organic materials has no toxic effect in Wistar rat.
