Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITY OF ALKALOID AND NON-ALKALOID LEAF EXTRACTS OF CALLISTEMON VIMINALIS BY CARRAGEENAN INDUCED PAW EDEMA IN AN -ANIMAL EXPERIMENTAL MODEL

ABSTRACT

The local communities of different regions of Nepal and India have been using various medicinal plants as a primary source of their health care system and in fact these medicinal plants are used to cure a large number of diseases. Bottlebrush is a small but spectacular evergreen tree of the family Myrtaceae. It is well known as “Bottlebrush Tree”. Different leaf extracts (alkaloidal and nonalkaloidal) of Callistemon viminalis were prepared by using various solvents. The individual extracts were subjected to qualitative chemical analysis for the nature of compounds. All the extracts exhibited dose dependent effect on inflammation i.e. 40.47% and 52.38% inhibition at doses level of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg respectively in alkaloidal extract and 42.85% and 54.76% inhibition at doses level of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg respectively in non alkaloidal extract. The alkaloidal and non alkaloidal leaf extracts of Callistemon viminalis exhibited the anti- inflammatory activity compared to that of Indomethacin (Std. anti-inflammatory drug). Significance was evaluated by t-test and then the values were compared with the control group. Further work on the types of phytoconstituents can reveal the exact potential of the plant to inhibit several types of inflammation and encourage in developing a novel anti-inflammatory drug in future.
