Abstract

ANALYSIS OF BIOACTIVE COMPONENTS FROM CHLOROFORM AND HYDROALCOHOLIC EXTRACTS OF INDIGOFERA CORDIFOLIA SEEDS BY GC-MS

ABSTRACT

The use of plant extracts as therapeutic agents is undoubtedly popular. With the advent of newer technologies for the analysis of chemical components, herbal medicines are being studied extensively for their chemical contents, in addition to their pharmacological effects. The present study deals with the identification of constituents present in the Chloroform and Hydroalcoholic extract of the seeds of the plant, Indigofera cordifolia, belonging to family Fabaceae. The dried seeds of Indigofera cordifolia were powdered and extracted with chloroform and Methanol: Water mixture in the ratio 70:30. The resulting extracts were evaporated with the help of a rotary evaporator and analysed by GCMS. The GCMS analysis of both the extracts showed the presence of unsaturated fatty acids, terpenoids, steroidal compounds and heterocyclic compounds. The presence of a variety of compounds in the seeds of Indigofera cordifolia indicates its therapeutic usefulness and encourages further research for its exploitation as a potentially useful herbal alternative.
