ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes are essential for health professionals to be in touch with rapid advances in biomedical knowledge. Learning can be defined as change in behaviour. Current lecture based CMEs fall short of changing practice behaviours of participants. Active learning should be preferred rather than passive learning. Need to evaluate the CMEs is stressed. A workshop on experimental techniques was organised in the Department of Pharmacology, J.N.M.C. Objectives of the present study was to: evaluate cognitive effectiveness of the workshop, evaluate individual stations and analyse feedback obtained from the delegates. METHODS: Workshop consists two interactive experimental sessions, viz., I-Demonstration of Screening methods and II-Demonstration of Sophisticated Instruments. Miller’s model
(pyramid) was used for designing the stations. Delegates (n=50) were randomly divided into seven groups. On rotation each group attended all the stations. Both sessions were evaluated separately with the help of pre and post tests consisting validated m.c.q’s. A five point scale was used to evaluate each resource person and station by the delegates. Feedback regarding entire learning environment was obtained. Study was ethically approved. Data was analysed by standard statistical test and p<0.05 = significant. RESULTS and CONCLUSION: Results of pre and post tests (cognitive) suggest that both experimental sessions were significantly effective. Each resource person’s lecture and station was effective (excellent to moderate). A collaborative approach was followed. Feedback results indicated that factors like demonstration, hands on training, learner centred, group based learning, interactions, visual inputs etc facilitated learning. Delegates expressed the need to frequently conduct such workshops involving active learning.
